Central Otago is New Zealand's coolest wine region, and the world's most southerly wine region. The centre of the region is on the 45th parallel, which is the same as Bordeaux, but the climate is similar to Burgundy. Most areas in NZ have a maritime climate, however Central Otago is land-locked resulting in an almost continental climate. It also has very low annual rainfall, around 400mm a year, compared to the West Coast, just 100km more west where the rainfall is measured in meters! Being so dry means the vineyard needs irrigation. The advantage though is that Central Otago has far less problems with fungal diseases compared to other parts of the country.
Queenstown is the tourist Mecca, besides wine tourism it is offering adventure sports, skiing, mountain biking. And it is the scene of the Lord of the Rings Middle Earth. Wanaka is home to Challenge Wanaka, the famous Iron Man and Half Iron Man event. Just over the Lindis Pass is Omarama, famous for fantastic gliding.
